"Mall Walk’s debut LP arrives like a puzzle box without a key: a self-contained and confident burst of razor sharp post-punk with noisy shoegaze effects that’s startlingly modern in sound and defiantly insular in spirit. Its outlook might be dour, but its danceable bass lines, textured rhythms, and layered guitars provide inner velocity to balance out lyricist Rob I. Miller’s acidic one-liners. Funny Papers may not have been the most cheerful record released this year, but it was one of the most honest."
- Mariana Timony / BANDCAMP DAILY
"There are reminiscent tones of Siouxie and the Banshees, early 90’s shoegaze, and jangle pop all underpinned by deceptive bass lines and a drummer who seems well acquainted with Wire’s discography. Singer and guitarist Rob I. Miller’s voice sounds like a soft howl. You get the feeling that these guys are the smartest band in the room."
- Nate Harrison / DEADBEATS PANEL
"The trio mine a dark post-punk sound as the record unfolds, digging into the reverb with enormous bass grooves, tangled riffs, and hook filled vocals."
- Dan Goldin / POST-TRASH
There is no mistaking Mall Walk's music for "lighthearted" or "fun." "Funny Papers" is a brooding eruption of guitars and reverb set to driving rhythms like the palpitations of an oncoming heartbreak. The album's moodiness is only slightly offset by the catchiness of the refrains and melodies, but not enough to be misinterpreted as anything remotely "happy."
